The categories of membership in the Society are:

The Friends is managed by a committee elected by the members at the Annual General Meeting. The AGM is normally held on the Saturday nearest St Cecilia's Day (November 22nd) and is usually followed by a concert or recital which is free to Members. The Committee includes the Curator of the Collection and a representative of the Dean of the Faculty of Music. This Committee arranges events for Members which have included country house concerts, lectures, visits to other musical instrument collections and other places of interest. Other activites undertaken by Members are the selling of the Russell Collection publications (records, postcards, photographs, Christmas cards, books, technical drawings, and information leaflets) and also acting as voluntary guides for visitors to the Collection. The Friends have also organised a series of concerts in St Cecilia's Hall during the period of the Edinburgh International Festival using instruments from the Russell Collection.

Since its inception, the Society has provided funds which have assisted in the acquisition of a number of keyboard instruments which are now a part of the Russell Collection, as well as providing a set of chandeliers and other furnishings in the Hall and an audio loop for the assistance of the hard-of-hearing attending performances in the Concert Hall.
