What We Do : Services Provided by Edinburgh
University Collection of Historic Musical Instruments (EUCHMI)
Our Mission statement is : The purpose of the Collection is to promote
the study of the history, construction and functions of instruments of
music and all cognate matters, the furtherance of research and the
propagation of knowledge of instrumental history. The Collection will
maintain a substantial permanent collection in relation to these
objectives.
- A substantial permanent Collection of historic musical instruments and related archives is
maintained and made accessible for internal and external teaching and research
- Teaching is undertaken by the EUCHMI Director and Curator including supervision of postgraduate students
- The EUCHMI Director and Curator carry out and publish research, contributing to the University's RAE profile
- EUCHMI cares for a significant part of the national and international heritage of historic musical instruments
- Public access to a rich and diverse Collection of historic musical instruments is enabled through
exhibition and interpretation at the Reid Concert Hall Museum of Instruments and the St Cecilia's Hall Museum of Instruments
- EUCHMI contributes to the to the national and international standing and prestige of the University of Edinburgh
- EUCHMI supports lifelong learning with its permanent displays and by mounting scholarly temporary exhibitions
- EUCHMI staff answer enquiries from the public relating to the history, construction and functions of instruments of music
- From time to time EUCHMI lends items from the Collection to exhibitions elsewhere which align with the EUCHMI mission statement
- EUCHMI provides scholarly information about the Collection through printed and electronic catalogues and other publications
- EUCHMI provides practical information for instrument makers and scholars through the publication of workshop drawings
- EUCHMI promotes the study of musical instruments and their history by organising
research conferences, public lectures and short courses
- EUCHMI promotes the appreciation of historic musical instruments through
the publication of recordings and by making instruments available for recording
- EUCHMI promotes the appreciation of historic musical instruments by
organising concerts and providing instruments for use in concerts
- EUCHMI promotes the study of musical instruments and their history through
staff contributions to the work of learned societies
- EUCHMI promotes the study of musical instruments and their history by maintaining the Galpin Society website
- EUCHMI promotes co-operation between musical instrument museums nationally and internationally
through the Music Collections Forum and the International Council of Museums
- EUCHMI promotes co-operation between musical instrument museums nationally and internationally by
maintaining the CIMCIM website
- EUCHMI staff undertake external examining and asessment
- Support for school-based education and lifelong learning through the work of a professional museum educator
