John Donaldson (1792-1856) combined the professions of music and law, and pioneered the university teaching of acoustics. He established c 1850 the collection now known as the Edinburgh University Collection of Historic Musical Instruments.
This exhibition shows unique examples of the equipment and instruments bought and invented by Professor Donaldson for the Music Classroom of the University of Edinburgh in the 1840s and 1850s.
This exhibition was mounted by the Faculty of Music of the University of Edinburgh in association with the International Symposium on Musical Acoustics which took place, for the first time in Edinburgh, in August 1997.
The Catalogue of the Exhibition is freely available on the World-Wide Web.
