This web page lists known and reported brass instruments by F. Besson
(London) and Besson & Co as a service to scholars, and owners of
London Besson instruments. The information can help with dating
instruments and identifying models of instrument. The list supplements
existing published information with data which would quickly become
incomplete in printed form. The instruments listed are in one of the
following categories:
Wherever possible one of the authors (Arnold Myers or
Niles Eldredge) has examined the item, but in other cases the
information has come from the published catalogues, check-lists and
websites of museums or from personal communications. The authors
welcome comments, corrections and further information, e-mail:

This list contains information on all known brass instruments made in
the Besson factory in London before 1900 - some of them extant, some
lost long ago, and some reported in living memory but not now located.
The instruments are presented in order of serial number (which we
believe to be chronological) or date. Some of the data about technical
details and inscriptions has been recorded at first hand, and some is
taken from correspondence or publications. Since the data has been
obtained from various sources, the amount of information on each
instrument varies. In particular, the inscriptions are recorded to
differing levels of detail by different cataloguers and as a result
descriptions of the inscriptions are not entirely uniform. A full entry
includes:
In transcriptions from archival records, -flat denotes a flat sign; -natural denotes a natural sign
