Bursaries

St Cecilia's Bursary Rules for Applicants

1. A travel bursary offered annually by the Friends of St Cecilia's Hall and Museum, Edinburgh shall be known as St Cecilia's Bursary.

2. The Bursary is open to post-graduate and undergraduate students of music and related subjects to assist with expenses in connection with projects involving early music and early music technology. "Early music", in this context, is very loosely defined as covering any period up to c.1750. The grant may be used to cover travel and special projects but not for regular classes or lessons. It will be offered, in order of preference, to students at Edinburgh University, students at other Scottish institutions, or students studying elsewhere.

3. The Committee of the Friends of St Cecilia's Hall administers the Bursary. It will have absolute discretion as to the appropriateness of projects for which applications are made, the number of bursaries to be awarded, if any, and their amount. It may consider the state of the bursary fund and the number and value of bursaries recently awarded, and any other relevant factors. For guidance, in 2008, five bursaries were awarded with a total value of £1,200.

4. The Committee may delegate responsibility for the bursaries to a sub-committee which will report to the Committee. The Committee's decision on all matters is final.

5. Applications for bursaries will normally be invited early in the calendar year and awarded in time for use during the summer vacation. Applications should include all relevant details of the applicant, an outline of the project for which funding is sought, an estimate of the costs and the proportion that the applicant hopes the Bursary will cover, and the contact details of academic supervisors.

6. Winners of bursaries are required to give an informal written report on the activities on which they were spent to the committee within six months of the activities being completed. The Committee may publish the report in Soundboard or any other journal of the Friends. The copyright of any such report will remain with the author.

7 If, in the opinion of the Committee, there is no longer any need for bursaries, or there is no likelihood of bursaries being awarded in the foreseeable future, it may apply any remaining bursary funds to other purposes sanctioned by the constitution.
