History: The collection was founded about 1570 by Ferdinand II (1529-1595) of Tirol, Archduke of Austria. It has been housed in two main locations: Schloss Ambras, and Schloss Ruhelust. In 1806 the collection was moved to Wien; it was exhibited from 1814 in the Belvedere, and from 1891 at the Kunsthistorisches Museum.

History: The museum was founded in 1857 as Vorarlberger Landesmuseumsverein. It has been a state museum since 1947 (Land Voralberg).

Collection: 4 instruments made in Vienna and Pressburg between the 18th c. and ca. 1830, including grand piano, Anton Walter, Wien, 1780.

History: The Haydn Museum was founded in 1935 in the residence from 1766 to 1778 of Joseph Haydn.

Services: guided tours on request, taped performances, occasional concerts. Reference library contains literature about Haydn, autographs and other manuscripts, first editions, etc; photograph collection.

10 museums are described below, 7 of which are departments or branches of the Landesmuseum Joanneum, which was founded in 1883. Its music section was first opened in 1936. The other three museums are in the vicinity, and their musical instruments are included in the major musical instrument catalogue for the geographical area:

History: Collection of instruments used by the corps musicians. Among European arsenals, Graz military played an important role in spreading the alarm.

History: Founded in 1913 by Viktor Geramb; many of the wind instruments were in the Bezirksmuseum Fürstenfield in 1931. Some of the instruments came from wind bands in local church chapels or were used with church choirs.

History: A large drafty hunting museum with 24 rooms was founded in 1953.

History: In 20 rooms, 30 km. southwest of Graz, in the castle of Stainz is a folk museum dedicated to country domestic arts practiced since the 19th c.

VII. Landschaftsmuseum Schloss Trautenfels (Abteilung des Landesmuseums), A-8010 Trautenfels. Tel.: (03682) 22 33.

Collection: about 100 sound-producing objects including: anthropomorphic whistle, 4 alphorns, barrel organ, organ bellows, diatonic harp, dulcimer, zither, bowed zither, jewsharp, triangle, many rattles, bells, jingle bells, ratchets.

History: Trautenfels Castle lies above Ennstal and has crowded exhibition rooms. Even so, only some instruments are on display; many are in storage. This is the largest collection of Steirischen idiophones.

History: In the storerooms of the Stadtmuseum are a number of implements with musical uses, largely used by the military.

History: Established in 1967 in rooms in the Palais Saurau; today located in the Palais Meran. It became the Institute of Performance Practice of the High School of Music and Performing Arts. Around 1979 the institute began procuring copies of baroque instruments as well as playable original bowed strings and an early piano. The 3 violins, viola, and 'cello have their original necks and bassbars.

Collection: about 240 musical instruments of European provenance, primarily stringed instruments.

History: The museum was founded in 1823 and first opened in 1845. The musical instruments collection has been on display in the Zeughaus (Armory) since 1970.

Collection: about 250 instruments, mostly European, from the 16th through the 19th c., including strings and wind instruments. The Musikinstrumentensammlung is part of Museum Francisco Carolinum's library.

History: The nucleus of the Musikinstrumentensammlung are the historically most interesting instruments from the Benedictine Abbey at Kremsmünster, which were given to the Oberösterreich Landesmuseum in 1836. The collection has been enlarged. It includes one of Beethoven's pianos: one made by Erard, Paris, 1803. It is on loan to the Sammlung alter Musikinstrumente, Kunsthistorisches Museum, Wien.

Collection: about 450 musical instruments, mostly European art instruments, a group of which documents music in Salzburg during the Classical period when W.A. Mozart and Joseph Haydn were in the employ of the court of the archbishop. Notable instruments are: bass chalumeau, W. Kress, ca. 1700; colascione, ? Schorn, 1688; viola d'amore, Schorn 1761; harpsichord, Mayer, 1619; claviorganum, Zeiss, 1639; and a number of folk instruments: zithers, dulcimers, alphorns, etc. from the 18th and early 19th c.

History: The collection was begun about 1834 when the museum was founded by Maria Vinzenz Süss. A new building opened in 1967.

Services: exhibit of about 60 instruments; temporary exhibitions; guided tours; reference library; archives with musical autographs, iconographic and photographic collections; sound archives; photograph studio and services; and theater history collection.

History: The museum is installed in the oldest state museum building, built between 1850-1856. In 1885 the court arms collection was transferred to the Kunsthistorisches Museum. In 1891 the Imperial Museum was opened in the Arsenal. During WW II the museum was badly damaged; it was reconstructed and reopened in 1955 as Heeresgischichtliches Museum (Museum of Military History).

Services: library with some books containing descriptions of musical instruments used in the Austrian Army.

Collection: about 4000 instruments: including some 50 European-type instruments made in other continents; ca. 1150 Africa; ca. 2000 Asia; ca. 500 America; ca. 300 Australia and Oceania. The collection includes the private collection of Rajah Sir Sourindro Mohun Tagore, presented in several parts toward the end of the 19th c.

History: The museum was founded in 1928 from collections begun as early as 1806 by Kaiser Franz 1 (with the purchase in London of some of Capt. James Cook's South Sea expedition collections). In 1924 the state collections were separated and the Naturhistorischen Museum established in the Hofburg; in 1926 the Ethnographischen Abteilung was created, and in 1928 the first exhibition rooms of the new Museums für Volkerkunde were opened. After WW II, the two museums were rejoined into a single institution: the Museum für Volkerkunde. The departments are organized by cultural and / or geographical area.
