Research areas in Music include Composition, Musicology,
Organology, Musical Acoustics, Music Informatics, Music Technology,
Music and Medicine, and Music Psychology. Music has strong
links with other academic units in the University, including
Informatics, Psychology, Physics, Architecture, History of
Art and Medicine, and inter-disciplinary projects are encouraged.
Postgraduate students have access to first class libraries:
the Reid Music Library, situated within the University of
Edinburgh Main Library; the National Library of Scotland;
and the National Archives of Scotland. There is an excellent
instrument research collection: the Edinburgh University Collection
of Historic Musical Instruments (EUCHMI), including the Russell
Collection, located in two museums. There are laboratory facilities
for Musical Acoustics, well-equipped electronic studios and
excellent general computing resources. The postgraduate community
is multicultural and flourishes in an environment of diversity.
The rich artistic life in both university and city contribute
